Home

Mom is sleeping in the room a few feet away. I'm pleased she's still slumbering because she was not feeling great yesterday. "Overextended herself the day before," it seems. (Tee hee.)

Some things never change.

I cruised into western Kansas yesterday afternoon and there she was, perched in her zero gravity chair in the front room waiting. She'd been waiting all day for my arrival. It's quite reminiscent of her mother, my grandma Esther, waiting for me to stop by and visit on an afternoon trip back to college. She is more like grandma everyday, and that's a good thing... means she's got a lot of fight.

It's odd being home with a disorderly house greeting you. I guess I must've grown up somewhere in the last year (a little gift of being a New Yorker is that you don't have to grow up), because I took to task on a variety of things... watering zucchini, watching for giganto grass spiders in the giganto grass, giving the dog an impromptu bath with vanilla shea butter doggie soap, running errands for cleaning supplies and food items.

I was initially exasperated at the heat here! But it's a familiar atmosphere. I settled right in.

Deb came over and taught me how to put mom's dressing on. I confess that my tummy lurched a few times over at the incision site. Mom can't look at it while it's being dressed. She stares up at the ceiling with her teensy stick thin arms extended above and behind her head to support it. Much of her swelling is gone except for her torso. I suspect that swelling is not related as much to water weight as it is to her internal organs still facing trauma.

I'm happy to know I'll spend the next three weekends here with her, and can mow the grass, fold laundry and cook so daddy doesn't have to stress about it when he gets home late in the evening.

It's clear that mom's support system has done nothing but grow. There are mountains of cards spilling out of every room. Flower arrangements grace tables. The fridge is packed with fruits, veggies and other healthy yums. We had a really great dinner last night and I finally met a couple great friends of mom and dad. Speaking of paps, he walked in around 8:30 PM looking absolutely wild -- his shock white hair is longer, unruly with curls and big. He was bright red, and I scolded him about sunscreen. For a cancer survivor, he should be more careful about taking care of his skin. It's the largest organ in the body and melanoma is not on our wish list this year. After the scolding, though, I gave him a big hug and we chatted for a bit after mom went to bed. I'm giving his hair a trim tonight for sure.

Today the goal is a shower. I'll get her up and waterproof the incision site before scrubbing her little back. I'm a thrift-store junkie (fine, I admit I shop... a lot, but I'm cost conscious and have no problem matching a nice vintage shirt with a ten dollar pair of shorts), and mums received a brand new wardrobe yesterday of summer dresses, so we'll outfit her for the day, too.

It's a big unusual for me to spend this much time in Ulysses, or even in Kansas for that matter. I don't know that I've slept in my old bed this much since... early college? With the addition of my wedding bouquet, my room remains the same as when I was 19 years old.

I sleep quite well here.

PS: bear with the Go Yellow Friday banner. I left my Photoshop laptop back home, and can't change it out. Oh well. We'll go yellow all weekend.

  1. Good Morning, Paulette.

Hey, how great to have Taryn home! She is the best medication in the world. Her loving hands will tenderly nurse you, her tender heart will lovingly care for you. Strength, encouragement, hope, peace of mind are lining up steady and visible on the nurse's table beside the dressings, tape, and pills. There's something indescribably curative about little hands that you once guided and held tight when she had a scary dream or an ouie now washing your back and pushing a strand of hair back from your forehead. I can almost hear the laughter spilling out a certain house on Hickok Street. Enjoy every minute, my friend.

  2. Paulette, I'm so glad you have Taryn to help care for you and to keep the rest of us updated on your status. I remember brushing your hair at Grandpa and Grandma Fisher's house when I was little. I remember it like it was yesterday. I hope that you smile...as often as you can...and that you're putting this in God's hands. I'm certain your mom and dad are putting in some good words for you. ;-) God Bless! --Kim (Fisher) Christian

  3. It is so generous for Taryn to be home and giving this gift of time and nuturing to her Momma! Just wonderful Taryn. What a wonderful daughter you are to your parents! I'm sure they are very thankful for you. And for your visit. Thank goodness it is a little cooler here today. We are so thankful to read that the healing of the post-op incision is progressing towards being healed! We continue to pray for your healing to wellness Paulette. Hang in there. 4. Good Afternoon on Sunday, Paulette.

The sun is shining bright, and the air is filled with the wonderful aromas of flowers, fragrant bushes, and ... well, I'll be jiggered ... grilled steak -- excuse me a minute while I run around the neighborhood to see who is having steak for lunch ... my egg sandwich can be tasty another time, don't you think! Today is another opportunity for your body to rest and recover, heal from the inside out. Time, time, time. Breathe in, Paulette, breathe out. God is overseeing your healing progress. Lots and lots of people are praying with you and for you.

    Today's Joke: "Letter to God"

    Dear God,
If we come back as somebody else, please don't let me be Marsha Dinkins -- because her socks always fall down.

    Dear God,
Thank You for the baby brother, but what I asked for was a puppy. I never asked for anything before. You can look it up.

Encouraging Words from Philippians 4:19 -- "God will meet all your needs, Paulette, according to His glorious riches in Christ Jesus."

Have a relaxing, restful Sunday, Paulette.

    Praying for you,

  5. Dear Paulette on a Monday afternoon,

You are in our thoughts and prayers. Little by little your body is responding to rest and good nutrition, to encouragement and prayers, to love and laughter. The other day I was thinking (that's a good thing, joyce!) -- and I thought about how every part of your recuperation is like a strand of healing, each one powerful on its own. But here's the good part, Paulette -- when God starts braiding those strands together, the cord becomes even more powerful in combination than each strand's own strength. In Ecclesiastes 4:12 the last half of the verse goes like this: "A cord of three strands is not quickly broken." The Lord is braiding the cords of prayers, His healing power, love, the promises in His Word, laughter, medication, rest, and nutrition into restoration of your body and peace of mind.

Today's Joke (but something worth considering!): Perhaps the best way to curb high school dropouts would be to make a high school diploma a prerequisite for obtaining a driver's license.

Encouraging Words from Psalm 121:2-3,7 -- "Paulette's help comes from the Lord, the maker of heaven and earth. He will not let her foot slip -- He who watches over her will not slumber .... The Lord will keep her from all harm -- He will watch over her life."

Have a great Monday, my friend.

    Blessings and Love,
    Joyce

  7. I am always about -- BIG FAT FUN.... but I'm also a little selfish! If we come all the way done there - I want to sit by you and quietly tell you how important to me---YOU ARE! You were my FIRST REAL BUDDY! I learned so much from you and I cherish those two years that we were like SISTERS! You will have to let us know when your harvest is over and if Greg has time to breathe. REMEMBER... Courage is not Always something Huge... It can be at it's GREATEST when it is as simple as saying "I WILL TRY AGAIN TOMMORROW!" Love you - Connie & Jerry

  8. Paulette -

So glad you're home. I've tried to send you a couple of these posts from my Blackberry (but have had a difficult time uploading). Nevertheless, I'm so glad to know that you're back home where you belong.

I can't imagine your journey...but can certainly imagine you fighting your way through it. You're tough when it counts and this is certainly one of those times. It's great that Taryn could come back to be with you at home.

Neice Amber clued me into the site that Taryn set up, and it's been interesting (educational - painful - emotional) to "watch your progress" albeit voyeuristically.

Regardless...know that we're thinking about you and that our thoughts and prayers are with you for a full recovery!

Sorry that we can't be at the event on the 21st. Have fun and enjoy everything that you can. Say hello to Thane, Taryn and Greg for me.

Take care - Hope to see you sometime this fall on a trip through Ulysses. Or - of course - if you're ever in Tulsa...please look us up.

    Kevin Burr
